Abacus
Trade offers high quality, unique and often quite unusual artifacts and
products from Asian countries. The partners deal directly with
producers, artists, collective organizations, small entrepreneurs or
family businesses – all with fair business practice in mind, and with a
certain artistic flair. They find some extraordinary and beautiful
things, things which respect artistic traditions, and which also have a
cosmopolitan edge. |
|
Abacus Trade is also proud to have on offer Herat
silk scarves made by the women of the ArteZan project in Kabul,
Afghanistan. These extraordinary accessories come in a rich variety of
jewel and earth tones and support the women and their families,
providing not only income for these women, but also literacy training
and other education for them and their families.
These shawls have
become known here in Canada through the efforts of Khorshied Samad, wife
of the Afghan ambassador to Canada. Khorshied is the Founder and
President of Artists for Afghanistan Foundation, Inc. She is
working to help develop ArteZan designs into a thriving industry, and
expose the world marketplace to the beautiful silk shawls that are woven
by these Afghan women and their families.
